Introducing the Clans - Part 2: D'Koruyi

Allow me to introduce you to one of the warrior clans of Y'Dahnndrya. Two things that set this clan apart are their ability to hide their emotions in public and their way of speaking. They don't use contractions!

The D'Koruyin Clan

  • Name: D'Koruyi
  • Pronunciation: The clipped 'd' sound isn't really a full syllable on its own so /dKO ru yee/ is how you pronounce it.
  • How They Interpret Their Name: Protectors of the Children
  • Clan Color: Green
  • Clan Symbol: Soaring Haw'ikh (see below in the slideshow)
  • Location on the Map: West central and southern part of the continent of Sheromoth.
  • Terrain Type: Canyons and scrub-land in the northern part, desert hill country and grasslands in the middle, prairies and marshes in the southern coastal areas (check out the slideshow for my edited open source inspiration photos)
  • Language: Koryu (KOR yoo)
  • Naming: D'Koruyin children are given a single name when they are born. They choose their surname when they come of age. When they marry (choose a life-mate), both parties discuss and choose one surname or the other, or a combination of both surnames.
  • Type of Government: Tribal Council headed by a single High Chieftain - Each tribe is represented by council members who must fight for their position in trials of mind and might. Only the strongest and wisest may hold any leadership position and it is also restricted to males. These council members meet periodically to discuss things pertaining to the entire Clan but the tribes are otherwise self-governing.
  • Current Person In Charge: Zev Zared, father (pareh) of Tsadok Akal'a, is the current High Chieftain of the D'Koruyin.
  • General Conduct: Within the tribe, women are equal with men except in the area of leadership. This could change if a woman was determined enough to do what it took to be the victor in the trials. It's not so much a law, as it just hasn't happened yet. All D'Koruyin are trained warriors. Most keep their hair long and learn new and interesting ways of securing it for their nomadic lifestyle. Women do have a say within the tribe, so please don't be too hard on these hard-working folk.
  • Tolerance Level: When dealing with out-clanners, they do not show their emotions so they can be hard to understand. They are fiercely territorial and will kill an unannounced out-clanner who has trespassed into their territory without hesitation. But during any multi-clan gathering, they are valuable additions to the discussion table.
  • Religion: They are mono-theistic, worshiping the single creator deity who they call Kai'yanga, Creator. (kie YAHNG gah)
  • Shrine and Current Guardian: Mesna'ya is a canyon in the northern region of D'Koruyin territory. The name means 'singing canyon'. Read 'Ripples' to find out why. The current guardian at Mesna'ya is Tehra Oh'n.
  • Housing: Orths are similar to yurts, easy to set up and take down and perfect for a people on the move.
  • Clothing Style: Cool, gauzy fabrics and sueded leather make up most of their clothing. The simple styles give them free range of motion and protect them from the light of the suns.
  • Special Food and Drink: Hon'te is a sweet wine made from bansan berries, used on special occasions. Hont'sen is hon'te that is aged at least ten years. It's really strong and reserved for the most sacred occasions within the tribe. One of the foods they are known for are their jerked meats, of which the favorite is d'nagze (dNOG zeh).
  • Exports: They are famous potters and bone jewelry artisans.
