Book Notes: September 13, 2023 - More Nonfiction Reviews

Welcome to the scenic route! The sun's shining again, but there's been a bit of rain lately. That's an encouraging thing, and I hope there's more rain later today or this week. I do know the temperature is supposed to be nice Sunday morning. Yea! Are you ready for the book reviews and word prompt? Just keep reading!

Book Review: Pomosexuality: Lust Clusters, Sexual Revolt, & the Christian Responses by Douglas Wilson

Pomosexuality: Lust Clusters, Sexual Revolt, & the Christian ResponsesPomosexuality: Lust Clusters, Sexual Revolt, & the Christian Responses by Douglas Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was able to listen to this audiobook and was happy to find it narrated by one of my new favorite talk show hosts. If you're sensitive to strong words, I recommend skipping this one. No punches are pulled and Douglas Wilson calls things as he sees them. I find there were some good points made in this book, especially the part about Christians hating the wrong things. If you're a Christian looking for a book that pushes you to think, something not too long and pretty straightforward, then this book might be a good fit for you.

Book Review: Church Music and the Other Kinds: A Musical Manifest of Sorts by Douglas Wilson

Church Music and the Other Kinds: A Musical Manifesto of SortsChurch Music and the Other Kinds: A Musical Manifesto of Sorts by Douglas Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very quick audiobook, but the points he makes are good ones. I'd love to know more about the singing of psalms, but having grown up Baptist, that wasn't really something we did so much. There were contemporary renditions of psalms, though. I wonder how and if that would fit the bill. I need to read through this one again, possibly as a study topic. But I really enjoyed it. One thing I might disagree on to a certain extent is that when our hearts, by which I mean our desires, line up with God's Word, and there is a need, God supplies the surrendered soul with the ability needed to accomplish the task. So I have to wonder if the reason more churches don't sing cantatas is less about the complexity and more about the lack of desire to sing long programs of music. That was only one of the things I pondered as I listened to the audiobook. If you're a Christian who loves to sing in church with other believers, then I recommend reading through this. It did make me think.

I really enjoyed listening to these audiobooks and plan to buy hard copies of the set. These got me thinking and I do love a book that starts me thinking in the right direction...which is God's direction and lines up with His Word.

Just Keep Writing: Wednesday Whimsy

If this is your first time participating in this kind of writing exercise, you're in for a treat. If you've done this with me before, just keep scrolling for the prompt.

Rules:

  1. You can use any/all of the words and/or the photo in the prompt below to create a unique written work. Fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, even lyrics are acceptable.
  2. Please keep the material you write clean (i.e. nothing R-rated or worse) if you wish to share the link to your work here, as well as if you link back to my site. I strive to keep my site free of such things. My readers know and expect this. I respect your right to write whatever you feel you need to write. And you're free to use my prompts. But if your material is graphic, I'd rather not view it, and most of my readers will not wish to.
  3. Have fun! This type of exercise is perfect for growing in the writing craft, or for helping through a rough patch in your current WIP. If you're looking to push your author limits and you normally write in nonfiction prose, try a whimsical collection of lyrics. If you normally write poems about real life events, try your hand at a fanfic. Give yourself some room to explore.

Don't forget to leave a link to your creation (unless you're writing graphic material) so my readers and I can check out your work. I'd appreciate a link back to this post to help me reach more readers, but it's not required.

This could be a fun list to work with. What do you think?

Thanks for spending a bit of your time on the scenic route with me today. I'm happy you visited! Won't you visit again tomorrow and bring a few creative friends along with you? I'll have a word prompt ready and waiting.

Until next time,
