Book Notes: November 16,2022 - Elana Johnson

Welcome back for another round of book reviews and another writing prompt! I hope you'll see something which interests you.

So let me get started...

Book Review: The Island House (Getaway Bay Romance book 1) by Elana Johnson

The Island House (Getaway Bay Romance Book 1)The Island House by Elana Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved hearing about this character who is only vaguely mentioned in the Carter's Cove series (book 1). It was heartwarming to see a woman who'd been hurt so badly restarting her life in such a drastic way. When I met these two MCs, I knew this story was going to be a winner. It's far-fetched, sure, but then that's what a romance novel is supposed to be, right? The best thing about this one was the absence of all things which should remain private and the inclusion of those little things which show how the MCs are growing closer together and overcoming obstacles.
There are a few technical mishaps, but overall, they didn't pull me out of the story. The setting and characters are well-crafted and it was really easy to step into the story and not want to come out until the end.
If you enjoy sweet, clean romance which takes place on an island, this book might be just the ticket.

Book Review: Boyfriend by Mistake by Elana Johnson

Boyfriend By Mistake (Carter's Cove Beach Romance #1)Boyfriend By Mistake by Elana Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Pleasant Romance

This book was a little different than I expected, but in a good way. I love Liz Isaacson's books so I thought I'd give this one a chance. I'm glad I did.
The MCs were likeable, interesting people with admirable qualities and enough flaws to make them come alive. The conflict was a bit of a stretch for me, but it worked well enough to keep me reading. There were only a few typos but none which pulled me out of the story. It was clean but on the spicy side.
If you enjoy clean, beach romances with a little spice, you might enjoy this story.

I prefer the books this author writes under the name Liz Isaacson since those are more inspirational. But these are sweet and clean with decent plots. They'd work well for Hallmark movies, I think.

Just Keep Writing: Wednesday Whimsy

If this is your first time participating in this kind of writing exercise, you're in for a treat. If you've done this with me before, just keep scrolling for the prompt.

Rules:

  1. You can use any/all of the words and/or the photo in the prompt below to create a unique written work. Fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, even lyrics are acceptable.
  2. Please keep the material you write clean (ie. nothing R-rated or worse) if you wish to share the link to your work here, as well as if you link back to my site. I strive to keep my site free of such things. My readers know and expect this. I respect your right to write whatever you feel you need to write. And you're free to use my prompts. But if your material is graphic, I'd rather not view it, and most of my readers will not wish to.
  3. Have fun! This type of exercise is perfect for growing in the writing craft, or for helping through a rough patch in your current WIP. If you're looking to push your author limits and you normally write in nonfiction prose, try a whimsical collection of lyrics. If you normally write poems about real life events, try your hand at a fanfic. Give yourself some room to explore.

Don't forget to leave a link to your creation (unless you're writing graphic material) so my readers and I can check out your work. I'd appreciate a link back to this post to help me reach more readers, but it's not required.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you saw something which you found interesting. Maybe one of these books looked like something you'd enjoy. Or maybe the word prompt has your creative fires stoked. Whatever the case, I'm glad you visited. I'll have a fresh word prompt for you again tomorrow.
